What are "estimated" dates?

When a profile is missing an important date (most notably, birth date), Geni will automatically estimate it based on the birth and death years of immediate family members and descendants.

Regarding "Estimated Dates".

I was look at the date of my great grandfather Raymundo Balunsat Lumicao whose estimated birth date was 1744-1899.  This is 120 year span.  Why is this span of years that far apart?  Can't the estimated dates be closer for someone that lived that long ago?  It seems to me that one generation to the next from parent to children would be (average) 20 to 30 years.

What is the procedure that Geni estimates unknown birth and death dates?   How would I be able to estimate birth and death dates myself?
