It will not allow me to update a death.  There is no area for status--Living  Deceased

It is most infuriating since I now recieve notification of my deceased father's birthday. I could only add an event on his profile but not update him as deceased. Any ideas? (I am in tears...)

Geni is really the worst genealogy-prog I ever saw.

Especially when it comes to deceased family members they should really have something acting FAST, and not something taking so long that the funeral is already over. It gets especially annoying when the whole griefing family gets birthday- and wedding anniversary-reminders of the deceased, just because the programmers play the "slow coach". What is this?

It's really time to extract our data and turn our back to geni forever.

I just checked in to Geni today, and my Father's profile had reverted back to me to edit. I have now been able to mark him as deceased.

Perhaps all that was needed was a little patience - there must be a lot of updates to process.

Jessica, It seems it would be equally dumb if someone could instantly shut down someones active account and have it transferred to someone else only by saying the person died.  If I reported you as deceased, should you're account be instantly deactivated and transferred to a relative?  Obviously not.  Geni has to balance the potential protection of an activated account with the respect of the family when someone passes. This requires a little verification and human interaction.  What they can do immediately is remove birthday and anniversary alerts, which is what I put in as a feature request. http://help.geni.com/entries/487898-disable-birthday-anniversary-no...

This is really the height of dumb - a genealogy site that doesn't let you change status to deceased is laughable.  When did this happen?  My mother just died this morning.  I'd like it updated NOW.

I haven't tried this, but it sounds promising. Mike Stangel wrote this today in another discussion. http://www.geni.com/discussions/92328?msg=687049

It could be a good idea to in some way show that a profile you are manager for is claimed!

I've put this into a suggestion request.  Please vote for it if you want to see it.

I'm having the same issue trying to update my mother as deceased. GENI- this is very sensitive to us as our family is receiving notices about my parents anniversary and she is now gone from us. Please put this at the top of your priority list as a fix!

I just went through this.  They have to unclaim the deceased persons account and open it back up to be able to be edited by anyone else.  It took them about a month to get back to me on this, but go to the top of this page and click on "Submit a Request".  Explain the situation and include the deceased name and email.  They they have to go in and undo something, then you will be able to edit and put in their death date, etc.  Like I said, it seemed to take forever to get them to respond and change it, but just keep sending them reminders.  Hope this helps.

I have already reported that my father died once, and then again today. Based on the comments above, it seems that Geni doesn't want to update records actively.  Maybe some action could be taken ??

I reported my sister's death for nearly a month ago, and still is her account active, which means I can not update her profile.
I tried to click on "Report" again but was told that the account had already been reported.

How long does it take for Geni to remove her email address?

I reported my father's death almost a month ago, and yet his account is still active and I cannot update his profile or any of the profiles which he entered.

How long does it take for a report to be acted on?

Who will be the manager of the profiles he added?

I notifed Geni regarding my father-in-laws death ... well today would've been his birthday and guess what came up??  That he is turning 96.  Well you just ruined my husband's day ... good job!  If this doesn't come off soon, I will unsubscribe and put you in as SPAM.  Get with it!

I did a "report" and  put that an uncle was deceased and Geni has not changed his status - I am his account manager. They have left his e-mail address up and you can still send him messages.  I tried to click on "report" again and it states that he has already been reported.

I tried the same thing for my grandfather today, hopefully they will change his status.  I  am not sure why they won't change it.  I also added the event to their time lines.  Very frustrating.

Glen, you may want to submit that to Geni as a bug.

I tried this but when I click "Submit" nothing happens.  The "You are reporting _____" dialog does not close and there is no feedback that the report was accepted.

This must be a browser problem.  It didn't work with IE7 but it worked with Firefox 3.6.13 (i.e. I got feedback that the report was accepted.)  Don't know yet if it fixes the problem with the locked profile.

"Go to the profile of the deceased person.  Select the option on the right-hand menu that says "More Actions".  Choose "Report".  A screen will come up.  From the pull down select "Deceased" and add a comment for the Geni staff.  They will then take the needed action to close the account."

Thanks Jeff.  I tried this but when I click "Submit" nothing happens.  The "You are reporting _____" dialog does not close and there is no feedback that the report was accepted.

If the persons profile is not claimed, the any family member should be able to change it.  If the profile is claimed, it's not hard, read my answer below.  What's difficult about "Report", "Deceased"... how much easier can it get.

It's a really bad idea to make this so difficult to do. It's not like they can report it to you, and people are generally updating this sort of thing at difficult moments in their lives and you have to make things even harder on them? This is the sort of reason why I give my money to ancestry.com and not here. Boo Geni.

I can't make the changes for my husband's death either. For the last two years I've been getting birthday and anniversary reminders, so I've just marked all email from Geni as spam. This means that I miss out on notifications from the rest of the family though.

Linda, had your sister joined Geni and "occupied" her profile? If so, perhaps her privacy settings are such that you are not able to edit her profile. Maybe the Geni staff will need to intervene if she still has an active email address on her account.

Yes, any ideas.  It won't let me update my sisters death.  But when I click edit on my kids or some others that I entered, it gives me a choice.  Is it because I did not enter her originally?  How can I change it now - obviously she can't go in and do it.
