How do I merge two family trees?
Solution
There are two ways to merge your tree with another tree on Geni.
Merging with a living relative
If you have a relative who is already part of another tree you can merge your trees to create one more complete record of your family. Simply invite this person to their profile on your tree using the same email address on their existing Geni account. Once the person accepts the invitation, their profiles on each tree will be merged and any other overlapping information can be merged as well.
Tree merges are only initiated when someone on one tree invites someone on another tree to join their tree.
The person invited can choose whether or not to accept the invitation.
Trees are only merged when approved by someone in each tree.
Merging common ancestors
If you find a duplicate profile for someone on your tree (not a user, usually a common ancestor) you can also merge the trees using this common profile as the merge point. In order to merge you will need to invite the manager of the duplicate profile to your Family Group. Once they accept, you can use the 'Move this person' option from the more menu of the duplicate node to add it to your sidebar. Then navigate to the same person on your tree and drop the node on top.
Pro Users may use the Collaborators tool to work with other profile managers to merge deceased node. You may request to Collaborate with another Geni member from the managed profile or their Profile page on Geni. Once the request is accepted you will have the same editing rights as a Family Group member but will not have to add that person to your Family Group. Learn more about
