How do I change the status for a relative who has recently passed away?

A close, elderly relative passed away recently. No one knows his password.

When I click "Edit profile" and go to the "Basics" form, the usual "living" and "deceased" options do not appear, and there are no "date of death" or "place of death" fields. 

There doesn't seem to be any way to change his status to deceased. His children do not know his password. 

Any tips or suggestions? Has anyone out there encountered this problem?
