can I upload an existing tree from ancestry.com ?
In the past we allowed users to import GEDCOM files onto Geni. However, this caused a tremendous amount of duplicates and cleaning up the Big Tree became a tedious task. Therefore, we have temporarily disabled our GEDCOM importer feature to prevent people from creating duplicate profiles.
You might first try searching for a Surname here or our Public Directory to see if any of your relatives already have those people included in their tree. If they do, you can easily reach out to them and merge your tree with theirs. Once you are merged into their tree, those profiles will also be in your tree and you will be able to access/edit that information.
If their profiles are not yet on Geni, you will be required to enter those people on the tree manually.
At least let new members with no profiles import GEDCOM to get started!!!!! There is no way I'm going to enter my whole tree by hand!!!!
I have a very extensive tree on ancestry, and I will wait till someone actually cares enough to allow a merge.... how silly... protecting your selves like this. There are no relatives anywhere on geni ...
I was informed recently by Geni that they are actively working on this. They plan to bring back GEDCOM upload, but do so intelligently without the massive duplication. So stay tuned - they're working to make this happen.
We need this feature! I just "met" a relative who has an ancestry.com tree. He has nearly 2000 people in it and I have the same on Geni. I need to be able to upload his data!!
