I am not able to dispute or comment on posts that other people add to my tree unless I am a PRO account holder. I am the original owner of this account but saw no benefit to me in keeping a PRO account anymore. It is unfair that I cannot dispute postings to MY account unless I pay a considerable amount of $$$ to have this feature. Every time a person adds incorrect information to my account my tree gets "contaminated" and I can't do anything about it unless I open my pockets, this may be proper to you GENI, but speaks very low of your true reason for having this website. VERY DISAPPOINTED!

Jeff, Geni Curator This is completely false. What are you trying to do that you get prompted to pay to send someone a message or reply to a discussion. These are free services, so you're doing something else.

Jeff, Geni Curator Maybe you're talking about trees over at MyHeritage? Smart Matches? Geni pulls online trees from many sources as possible resources that could help you build your tree. That is outside the Geni system. Sending messages to other Geni members and participating in Geni discussions is free. It's also free to collaborate and update content on Geni.

Ricardo J Ruiz de Porras Lugo Maybe you misunderstood me. I am talking about members or collaborators of my GENI tree who add incorrect information. I am not able to correct that information in any way unless I have a PRO account. I have sent requests to these people but they simply ignore me. There should be a way for me, as owner of the account to dispute, correct, or at least comment on a posting done by someone else. This is simply wrong! When I attempt to correct the information (using the "help" feature), GENI automatically asks me to upgrade my account, no other options allowed. I am requesting help from the community help to see if anybody has had the same experience and to see if there's a fix. -
Jeff, Geni Curator Ricardo, that doesn't require a pro membership. It sounds like you're describing a profile that is claimed or managed by someone else. Pro membership will not give you any additional permission to edit someone else's profile, just as them getting pro, wouldn't allow them to just edit your profile without your permission. If you're talking about public profiles (or private within your family group), you should be able to edit it, unless the other person blocked you (which would be another reason they may not respond as all messages are blocked). This is what Pro support gives you: http://help.geni.com/entries/61378330-What-are-the-benefits-of-a-Geni-Pro-membership- The pro support is primarily technical support and might not get in the middle of content disputes. Geni is not responsible for content - it's a user generated site (see terms of service). They're giving you free tools to build the tree and collaborate - it's not their fault the other person won't respond to you and they don't have a staff making sure information is correct. The volunteer Curators can partly fill this role. So if you need help, you should just ask instead of bashing Geni with inaccurate service information. What post / discussion are you trying to comment on which you're having trouble? What profile are you trying to update and with what information? I'll take a look at it.

Jeff, Geni Curator As I read this back, I feel I'm coming across overly aggressive and I apologize for that. Those that support the community forums have a great deal of love for this site, the software, and those that work at Geni (which is a small hard working staff). So feeling the criticism was inaccurate and unfair, I responded more defensively than I would like. To be honest, I got quite angry. Unfortunately for me, I can't edit or delete the forum posts. Sending messages, responding to discussions, updating profiles, and tree building is all free. Unfortunately the cost of providing customer support when users have a problem is more than they can offer free of charge to all members (this is fairly common for web service offerings). I'm sure professional support would have been able to fix the inaccurate information in your tree, but their are alternatives for getting help. The curator program is part of their effort to help users without a support subscription.

Ricardo J Ruiz de Porras Lugo Jeff: When you use phrases like "it sounds like", it tells me you are still not getting it. For example: I created a tree in GENI, I added "Annie X" to the tree and made all the research on her profile. Along comes "Ed", who is a collaborator on my tree and adds a SSN Death Index record on this profile. The record is incorrect, it is for another Annie with the same name and surname. I contact Ed to remove this incorrect info and he ignores my plea. I now "block" Ed from adding stuff on my tree, but this doesn't work, somehow he is able to keep on adding information on MY tree (?!). I ask GENI for help and the system sends me to a page that asks me to upgrade my account to PRO, no other options. This is wrong, an owner of a tree should be able to overwrite what other people (intentionally or unintentionally) post on member profiles. This was not a profile "Ed" added, this is a profile I added, I should have the right to manage it! Is that too much to ask? -
Ricardo J Ruiz de Porras Lugo Clarification: If I sound like I'm "bashing", I apologize, the word is "frustrated". To give you the benefit of the doubt, maybe I don't understand all the nuts and bolts of the software, but so far all I run into are roadblocks and my tree is still "corrupt" with all this bad info. -
Ricardo J Ruiz de Porras Lugo The only thing I've been able to do is to post a notification telling members of my tree this information is incorrect, but I don't think this is enough, I should be able to make the correction myself! -
Jeff, Geni Curator Geni doesn't really see an "owner" of a shared tree, so the idea of control in "my tree" falls short. Collaboration usually is positive, but it's not without occasional challenges. You can control the profiles you manage, but I don't think you can prevent someone from adding new profiles to a tree they share. I only use blocking in the cases of intentional damage or verbal abuse. If Ed did want to contact you about the problem, he wouldn't be able to do so. If the record added is a SS index, then you should be able to unconfim it, since those records are free and you manage the profile. If you can't reject the record match, i'd be happy to try or if all else fails, we could easily recreate the profile. -
Jeff, Geni Curator If you click on the SS Index Record, it should show you the index. On the bottom right (under the index) it should give you the option to unconfirm and ultimately reject the match. Follow these steps to see if that works: http://help.geni.com/entries/23668233-How-do-I-remove-a-confirmed-match-
-
Jeff, Geni Curator Also, while I hope we'll resolve this, a better place to note facts (or problems) would be in the "About" section on the main profile page.

Muammar Ghadafi ISHAK Perhaps change "Anne" profile to private might do. Not sure if it does fully work on a Deceased profile.
And also make sure "Ed" is removed from your family group :)
I have this kind of problem too when some collaborators simply change several profiles that I manage because they have their own naming convention. Some had fill in a generation number, and dates in first/last name field. Collaboration needs a mutual understanding to make it work :)

Jeff, Geni Curator Ed is Rucardo's third cousin and the record matches show up in his merge center for these families. It looks like an honest mistake of adding an incorrect source and I think the only issue was he didn't respond promptly to Ricardo's request to unconfirm the source. I think Ricardo should be able to unconfirm it himself, but if not, I can certainly do it and I'll make a request to Geni that they allow managers to remove matches in such instances when they lack a data subscription.
-
Jeff, Geni Curator I sent a message to Ed regarding the issue and the discussion. I've asked him to unconfirm / reject the SS index as well, as it would be best if he and Ricardo worked together on their shared tree.

Ricardo J Ruiz de Porras Lugo OK here it goes. The profile in question is for Roberto Rivera Ruiz de Porras, my cousin. Edgardo Faustino, a collaborator, provided what he though was his Social Security Death Index record (http://www.geni.com/people/Roberto-Rivera-Ruiz-de-Porras/6000000000544078399#/tab/source) The only problem is Roberto is alive and well and in fact is a prominent member of Puerto Rico's State Legislature. The SS Record is for another Roberto Rivera (Roberto Rivera-Garcia in fact). If Edgardo would have been a little more careful, he would have seen this Death Index is clearly incorrect. Can you please have this incorrect record removed from his profile? Thanks!
-
Jeff, Geni Curator I went to take care of it, but it was already done. So, I gave it the final send off, by rejecting it.
-
Ricardo J Ruiz de Porras Lugo Thanks Jeff. Next one: My son's profile (http://www.geni.com/people/Ricardo-Ruiz-de-Porras-Collado/6000000000511636937#/tab/source) The only source in the source tab has outdated information and information I deem private for GENI even though it is a "public" document (but you have to pay to retrieve it). I should be able, as manager, to reject or delete this entry, but I'm not able to do so, the system won't let me. Can you please remove this document in the source tab? Thank you. And thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated.
-
Jeff, Geni Curator Ricardo, just so you're aware, I did hear back from Ed and he said he must have just missed your message. He tried to remove the match this week, but it was already taken care of. It would be great if you tried to reopen communication.
As for your son, a public record index is a point-in-time historical record. So that's sort of like saying a census or marriage record is outdated. It is a source that shows a residence (prior or current), birth date, possible family members. The attachment of the source on your son's profile is also private to your family. The reason MyHeritage does not allow non-paying members to reject matches is that some people just don't like seeing matches and would reject them all, regardless of accuracy, which would remove them as sources for anyone else in the family that wished to source the data, a primary function of genealogy research. So, while I have no problem helping you remove inaccurate or bad information, I hesitate to do so with accurate records using my membership and curator rights to undo something that someone paid a membership to add. It's a shared tree and documentation is an important part of recording data. That said, since it's your son and you solely manage the profile, I'll make an exception and help remove it but I'll need to be added as a manager first (then I'll remove myself). I will make the suggestion to Geni/MyHeritage that a non-paying member be able to unconfirm a match (though not reject it) for a profile they solely manage, in order to remove a potential invalid source, as in the case of Roberto.
-
Jeff, Geni Curator Actually, since it's a private profile, I can't request to be added as a manger, but you might be able to add me using this number (and search). 5685693775440034593
Actions menu, Manager Options, Add Manager
The alternative, which I could do, is to add a second son and merge the two, which would make me a manager of your son's profile. Then I could remove the source and then remove myself as manager. But doing so might send a email to your family about the new addition to their tree, so I prefer to avoid that confusion.

Susan Renee Laskowska Mason Was it in the middle school of creating a file for a Plantagenet ancestor and realized I made a mistake after about 20 minutes (I have SO many programs lol). I went to change the title only to find the link deleted. I received a snarky email about how I was in error but what pissed me off the most was a command to not create medieval persons.
Who is he to tell me what I can and cannot create?
It’s perfectly acceptable to create entries which do not exists in the database and provide DOCUMENTS proving Linage but waiting on a merge request? Sorry 😐 My generation has no such patience.I think Geni needs to rethink this platform and perhaps try a red line approach.
