We see GEDCOM import (even if just basic) is 'planned'. Can you give me an approx. date that this will be available? We have a 150 person GEDCOM file that we'd like to use to expand in Geni. We hope it will be available soon. Thanks.

Important to be able to import a tree from a standard file format.
I have 25000 people in my existing tree on other software. Geni is only viable for me, if I can import a gedcom.
More important is the ability to not just upload but efficiently merge a GEDCOM into an existing tree to avoid duplication.
Gedcom is essential. Please inform me when I can import???

I am surprised this is still an issue? How did the World Family Tree get to 75 Million profiles? Surely people are not re-entering these from their other Family Tree sources (MyHeritage, Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.org). An update please! No chance of a pro-subscription before this is confirmed!
There is no way my wife and I are going to re-enter by hand 250 years of data across 6 family lines. Apparently you or your parent company wants to kill Geni as a free service. The pattern you are exhibiting is all too familiar. Gedcom files are the standard.
gedcom import should be reinstated.
The removal of the gedcom import appears to be a strategic business decision to raise subscription funds and has little to do with 'duplicates'. There is already an 'upsell' to sync duplicates with myheritage and I see no reason to not allow duplicates to be 'reviewed on import' and chose/merge from the import.
There is a big business opportunity for Geni to get this right. Come on Geni, send this to management and get become the industry leader
Ryan, as a Curator that merges often and talks directly with Geni management, I can tell you without assumptions or speculation, it IS about duplication. The Matches with MyHeritage have nothing to do with duplicates and they don't sync anything. They're references to help you build out the tree and can be confirmed and attached to a profile, but they don't do anything with regard to duplicates on Geni. Geni very much wants to allow importing of GEDCOM - they just have to figure out the best way to do it, maybe a couple generations at a time, then review. It's not an easy problem.
Thanks Jeff. I am glad you cleared that up because I come from a technology company that handles regular highly complicated software releases and I'm struggling to see why (years on in) the uploader hasnt be reinstated. Common data fields can simply reviewed and accepted by the user so your database only keeps 1 true identity card and discards the rest. Sure, it's complicated, and the first version will probably omit a bunch of fields... but this is not a big deal for a good developer.
The point on myheritage duplicates is more regarding how Geni is monetizing the site so allowing more uploads simply increases users and activity that can be monetized. It make sense to keep the Geni users happy, reactivate the GEDcom uploader and let the user de-duplicate. i.e dominate the market.
I eagerly await a clever solution...

FYI - my gedcom that I was going to import has about a dozen dups in 257 new family members. What a great discovery I made for you Geni... but I'll be damned if I am going to sit down for 4 weeks and enter them one by one. FYI - myheritage has an import tool and a de-dupe tool too. Please let me know if import and de-dupe is being developed or not. I need to know if I am sticking with Geni or not.

No complete Gedcom import/export feature --> no way for me to add all my data into Geni. I will not enter my 25,000+ people again to a website without those features.
Geni is the world tree, and I bet you just have to add a handful of profiles before you can get connected and find out that most of your 25000 people are already in the world tree.
The last one who claimed this just had to add his parents...
You make a great mistake by saying that GEDCOM import makes doubles in your system. You have lots of doubles now. lots.
So solve the problem with doubles in the present system, and then open up for import. This will give you many many new users, and many record in the system.
I use Family Tree Maker as my prime source and had no problem importing onto Ancestry and MyHeritage. How come not Geni? I have over 8000 names and certainly cannot start over.

In seeing in post topic of how to import my GEDCOM into Geni. I think it's necessary as backup. For me I invited family member to contribute and in doing so took over control of my father side of tree. So I exported all my Father side and Mother side, then asked my Dad to closed the account as he stop using for some reason some time ago. The after he closed his account I lost all my tree of father side that has been entered. This is a perfect example why a " backup " or export your tree and have the ability to " IMPORT " your export your GEDCOM file back to Geni is needed. I see this is been a topic question year 2012 to 2017. Say creating a new Geni account for someone and yourself. All the work entered should be able to export and then imported so don't have to start from scratch.

The GEDCOM import option has not been re-enabled, but a much better option is now available, called SmartCopy. At sites like Ancestry or MyHeritage, you build "your tree" and I build "my tree", and there is no easy way I could merge my tree with your tree. In those situations a GEDCOM import works well.
At geni.com, however, we are cooperating to build a single tree for all the people in the world -- the Big Tree, or the Whole World Tree. So I could talk about "my branch", but not "my tree". At geni.com, we talk about "our tree", and we don't want to mess up other people's branches by adding a lot of duplicates, as used to happen when GEDCOM imports were possible.
For working at geni.com, the trick is to get a free account at MyHeritage and upload your GEDCOM file there, and then use SmartCopy to copy the people a family at a time -- parents, siblings, spouses and children -- and then you view the tree in geni, looking for people who are already there. Whenever you see a blue indicator, that means you may be able to merge that person with someone who is already in the Big Tree at geni.com. After that, you don't need to copy the rest of the ancestral line -- just add people whom you know about, and pictures and documentation.
