How can I be related to mythological characters?

I do not know the proper place to ask this question, so if this is the wrong place, please direct me otherwise.  I just want to know how people end up showing that they are related to mythological characters such as gods and goddesses.  I mean that isn't really genealogy is it, it's just getting into silly stuff.
