Jeff, Geni Curator Could you explain this feature request? I dont understand what you're asking for and Geni might not as well.

I think your smartmatch system needs to enter the 21St century. I have a son. I am permanently seperated from his father, was never married and have never had any intention of adopting a mans surname if married. My sister shares the same beliefs. Enter "Smartmatch"! Smartmatch came up with a few suggestions after I added my very immediate family (not including my ex-partner). The information was 100% accurate. "Great", I thought... until I came to the smartmatch for myself. Everything was correct, right down to the obscurely named private hospital in which I was born. Then to my horror, I read my surname. It was my ex's. Smartmatch got everything right but has a very old fashioned & frankly incorrect view of naming women. There is not an official document in existence which lists me as having a surname other than Watson. Now, as I begin to add 350 known years of family history and smartmatches are inevitably sent to other Geni members and affiliated genealogical sites, I have a surname that I have never had, do not want... Need I continue to emphasise my point. While some women are happy, as is their right, to assume a name through the process of marriage, it is not correct for a genealogical site to make this decision for the records or those of us who retain our family name/s. This will only serve to confuse future genealogical research. My sons birth certificate records my name correctly. Smartmatch is doing something completely different. This needs to be corrected! It is inaccurate and will confuse many trees in the future. I will also point out that it is not only correct that my name be listed as Watson and not the name of an unmarried ex partners', it is also my right. My son's name is hyphenated out of acknowledgement of both sets of grandparents and Scottish naming tradition which runs proudly through my family (though usually not hyphenated). This needs to be corrected. Smartmatch changed my name on the basis of my son's hyphenated name. It didn't hyphenate my name. It gave me a name that was never mine and!!! referred to my ex as my husband. I am seriously considering deleting my account. This is manipulating information and creating false information, whilst masquerading as a professional and serious genealogical site. Surely this is not your aim. I really can't align myself with a business that manipulates information in this way. Is there any intention to correct the smartmatch system or is it an exercise in social engineering. Get it together. There are all sorts of recorded inaccuracies in historical documents as it is, not to mention law pertaining to marriage and whom should marry whom. Please don't add to the mellieu. If Smartmatch were a person it would be male and a very naughty boy:) Fix smartmatch. No matter our gender, none of us should be listed as someone's husband or wife (with a name change in the wife's instance) unless it is based on fact. Sure there will be instances when smartmatch gets a false match. That's to be expected. This isn't a false match. Your system collected the correct information and then "corrected' my surname and marital status. Please fix this. It doesn't look good. It looks like you're trying to manipulate something.
Perhaps a very short lived member...

Jeff, Geni Curator Kristi, SmartMstch data is not generated. It's matching data from another family tree posted on another site. If you're seeing a married surname, its because a human family member added it. Often software will default names for faster entry due to the most common uses, but this is optional and can be turned off.

Jeff, Geni Curator Kristi, I reviewed the SmartMatches and it looks like the two profile matches for you are from MyHeritage Trees from Apr 11 2011, both profiles of which appear to be managed by you. If you look at the bottom of the match, there should be a link to view the Full Profile at the bottom of the match and since it looks like you're the manager, you should be able to see the full profile.
I should also mention that using the last name of the husband is actually a modern, 19th-21st century, thing. Historically, women did not take the last names of their husbands.

Magnus Eriksson The Smartmatches algorithm is much better than the Treematches algorithm within Geni. Treemathces often give numerous apparantly incorrect matches, and also fails at finding some rather obvious matches. I suggest the treematches algorithm should be improved to resemble the smartmatches.
