Michael Barnhart This greatly limits the usefulness of this site. Instead of making things so hard that most people are unwilling to do the work all over again (when all other sites allow importing), make it so that any import erases the current tree first.
Let people decide if they want to keep their current tree (all new users have none, as an aside) or wipe it and import a gedcom file.
This way there are no duplicates and people like me will find this site useful. I am not typing in a hundred people again when I already did it once and simply import the file into all the other sites.

Eric Randol Schoenberg, Geni Curator Michael, you cannot "wipe" a person's tree because all of the trees are connected to each other. The idea is to have just one, definitive tree, so wholesale gedcom import is impossible without leading to endless duplication. Geni will be bringing back a limited gedcom import feature later this year. For most large trees, the data is already on Geni anyway. The best way to add new data is to use the SmartCopy app. https://www.geni.com/projects/SmartCopy/18783 . Contact a curator for any help.
People who are building separate trees are making a big mistake. The best way to do genealogy is on a collaborative site like Geni. Your best option is to start up again on Geni. It won't take as long as you think. And you'll be much better off as a result. -
Dr. Knut Michael Wittkowski I fully agree that GEDCOM import would be a good idea. The purported problem of duplicates doesn't exist with good Web sites. There is no difference between entering information about a person manually and copying information about a person from a GEDCOM file, similar to what myHeritage (Geni's parent company) does when importing information from other trees. Show the existing vs the new information for the person in question. Protect any curated information, but let users import information from a GEDCOM file one person at a time.
