Unable to remove incorrect great-grandparent

Hi,

In my family tree, my grandmother, Anne Margaret Matthews (nee Greene) has Joseph Warren Greene listed as her father.  This connection was made before I signed up and is a mistake.

My grandmother's dad was a Joe Greene, but not this one.  This one was married 3 times in the early 1800s (I assume a mistake), whereas my grandmother's dad was married once, in 1915. 

I have not been able to figure out how to remove Joseph Warren Greene from our tree.  When I try, I'm told it will 'split the tree'.  I don't know what that means, but I don't care about this guy's family since it has nothing to do with ours.  He's a stranger that was incorrectly linked.

Any help would be appreciated. Ideally, I'd like to see the connection 'unlinked' so I can add the correct Joseph Greene, who was born in Ireland on May 23rd, 1878.  Also note that Mary Greene (nee Lennon) is the correct mother of my grandmother.  She never married Joseph Warren Greene though!

  Hi Gene, sorry I can't be of any help but interested to see if anyone else can help you and their advice - so I've "followed" your query. Curious though to know how this happened - does it mean that someone else had linked their ancestor to your tree without your knowledge or consent? Is it something we need to be wary of? I'm fairly new to Geni so still learning how it all works here.

  No problem Carole.

  Looking at the revision history for Joseph Warren Greene, I think my brother joined Geni a few years ago, added our family details, including our Joe Greene.  He was then told there was a close match in 'Joseph Warren Greene' and he merged them.  Therein lies the problem.

  In addition to this thread, I added a similar request to the Discussion tab under the JWG entry.  A Curator responded yesterday and successfully removed him as the father of my grandmother - I am guessing we can't do that ourselves.  

  The problem right now is that JWG's wife, Mary Greene (Lennon), was also disconnected, but she is a real relative and should not even be connected to JWG.  I'm trying to get her reconnected since I spent hours adding her family line and now it's associated with JWG's tree and not ours...

  Aaaah right! Thanks Gene for enlightening me about how that can happen.

  Well it's good to know there is help available from Curators if needed in cases like this.  I'm glad you got it sorted for your Joe Greene. How frustrating for you though about the disconnection of Mary and her family line from your own tree display, when you'd spent so much time on that already. Good luck with it anyway, I hope you can correct it without too much more wasted time and work, and that Mary and her line can be removed from the other researcher's tree. Phew what a mix up!
