It seems that Geni can't or won't allow importation of Gedcom files. Does that mean we have to manually individually add hundreds of files to our trees? What about exporting files? I have just subscribed to Geni Pro and now find out I can't import or export. I might as well cancel my subscribtion if this true.

Jeff, Geni Curator You can export your GEDCOM. https://help.geni.com/hc/en-us/articles/229705167-How-can-I-export-my-GEDCOM-
Importing is more complicated because this is a shared collaborative world tree. Geni use to allow it and it became such a problem due to the mass duplication of existing profiles that we had to shut it down. For gedcom files of more than a few hundred profiles, there is almost certain to be lots of duplication. Geni is working on improved (generational) importing, but in the meantime, users can use the SmartCopy application to quickly move over data. See https://www.geni.com/projects/SmartCopy/18783

Glen Carlson This is ridiculous. Unless you started with this site as your main genealogy research site, who would want to transfer data here if you have to do it one person at a time? I have over 4500 people in my tree and that's small compared to others (an acquaintance of mine has over 11,000). The "SmartCopy" extension is extremely cumbersome to use. There aren't any instructions about it and if it's left to having to copy each person one at a time, how can the word "quickly" be used to describe it? It's not quick.
I understand Geni's desire to not have duplicate information. They should also be concerned with having erroneous information as that seems to plague the Geni database just as bad (though no where near as bad as it is with ancestry). In all seriousness, Geni has to get something better going. I have researched this topic a bit and it seems like it's been ongoing for several years now. What gives???

Garth Max Stiebel It's now 2019 - your site is incredible when it comes to researching relatives and ancestry but completely useless when it comes to building upon existing work done outside of the Geni site. Eventually the site will stop growing as users realize that duplicating their existing trees person by person on Geni provides less and less additional information. When will Geni address this problem before it kills the site?
