I am fairly new to Geni, but the following was immediatly confirmed by multiple longtime users.
The search mechanism does not support any wildcard mechanism.
This makes is extremely difficult to find matches, as many names of many different spellings and variations.
The least you would need would be the *
Something like the generally accepted ~ to support phonetic matching would be a pro.
