My problem is that the child of a set of parents is actually the child of another child of those parents.

My problem is that the child of a set of parents is actually the child of another child of those parents.
First check the relation tab of the child and see if the correct parents are in the drop-down list for the parents. If so choose the correct parents and you are done.
Otherwise the easiest way to fix this is in tree view:
Move the child to each of the correct parents and specify it is a child of that parent. That will create multiple parents for the child. Go to profile view and choose the correct parents on the relation tab (that will remove the wrong parents)

In all the confusion of trying to resolve this issue it looks as if someone else has "fixed it".
He is now, correctly, the son of Alexander MORRIS and not the son of his grandfather James MORRIS.
