How do I import family data from ancestry.com (or an Excel file)? I have 608 names to add and do not want to duplicate my efforts to date!

Monte Myles Anderson I have Legacy for a program, is it possibly to download info to Geni? Now I have to re-enter all my info manually.

Pam Wilson, Curator Jon and Monte, Geni previously had the ability to import GEDCOM files (the standard format used by most family history software) but has temporarily suspended it as they try to resolve how to avoid creating multiple duplicates of historical profiles again.
During the time that GEDCOMs were uploadable, up to 600 copies of some of the early medieval ancestral profiles (such as Charlemagne) were uploaded, and hundreds of users have been working for about two years to merge all of these duplicates together.
Until a solution is found (a system to allow upload of your more recent ancestors without adding duplicates to the historical tree), each profile must be loaded by hand entry. At each generation, especially before the mid-1800s, the person entering the tree should do a Geni search to see if each ancestor might already be in the Geni tree already, and if so, should attach her or his tree to the existing tree at that point rather than creating a parallel tree.

Bert de Jong So, they really expect me to manual add over 1000 persons in my tree?
I don't think so.

Terry Jackson (Switzer) Two points to add to what Pam Wilson said:
- it really istn' that hard to add 1000 profiles to Geni. (I added my 5000+ manually)
- You really should check Geni out carefully. You may well find that there are members of your ancestry already there and therefore fewer for you to add.

Gary Lotto I have been constructing a family tree for at least 10 years and have a lot of information in GEDCOM format as well as in other commonly used Family Tree formats. How can I incorporate that into Geni, rather than trying to enter the data manually and risk making errors?
I will not do it manually.

Bert de Jong I didn't say, it is hard, but how long did it take you to manualy add these 5000 persons?
I rather spend my time on research, then on doing things twice. :-)

Terry Jackson (Switzer) If you refuse to enter manually then nothing I say will change your mind but I would view it as a chance to double check what you have as you re-type. The alternative is to wait until the wonderful Geni team have resolved the problems involved in uploading Gedcoms and lift the ban. Of course by waiting you could be slowing down your collaborative research.

Michael Secchiaroli This is ridiculous... how long has this been in effect?

Brendan Browski When will this be fixed?

Michael Secchiaroli I honestly feel like the terms have been changed for me from when I signed up almost 2 years ago (probably what upsets me the most). I made a huge connection with someone over on ancestry and finally convinced them to upload the GEDCOM onto Geni (since I've done that in the past and "cleaned up" after myself). I feel like a huge *ss now. This has now made me look into other programs like myheritage.com... Yeah, I'm a little pissed.

Christopher Do they have a time estimate before the fix will be implemented?
