Here are the settings for profiles you manage.

By default, all your family members are private, unless you specifically make their profile public. Private profiles can only be viewed and edited by your family. As far as searching, the name can be searched by anyone on Geni with added control for allowing the view of Profile Photo and Current Location. I don't know if searching the name extends to Google - it may. Geni would like other family members to find they have a family tree online if they happen to search for their name. Of course, they won't be able to see anything (since the profile is private), but at least they'll know and can contact the manager of that profile to be invited into the tree.
Private profiles DO show up in Google--you may have to scroll down a lot if you just enter name, but if you add geni to name it's right there. I was shocked to see it shows profile pic and immediate family members/relationship with minors listed as minor daug. or son. Everyone should be alerted to the fact "private does not mean totally private" and they should be making it a choice to be "searchable" like Facebook!!!! They show up if your permissions are setup to allow a public search. That is configured in the permissions section of your account.
