My husband set up the tree and so I filled in my bit and went on complete my side but now messages to join or connect are being sent from my relatives to my husband's relatives and they don't know each other and are generations apart. Do I have to remove everything from my husband's tree and start a new one of my own? If so can I use all the information I've already put in or do I have to start again - which would be awkward with all my relatives that have joined?

Liivi Murumets Jill, when you say "messages to join or connect", ..
.. do you mean Home page "Tree completeness (enter email and invite)" and "People You May Know (Follow)"? The only solution I know of is to click on the X in top right (I'm not ready to add this email) one by one.
.. or do you mean tree matches and merge issues? Advise relatives and in-laws to edit their family group http://www.geni.com/account_settings/family
If you still want to keep your own relatives separate from your husband's, then take out trial Pro membership and split your relationship to your husband in your profile (the current profiles of your children will remain connected to him). Then add new profiles of yourself and himself (plus the kids in your branch) to the two split trees. Geni will probably find matches and, if you like, you can "semi-connect" your trees by accepting the merge on one side only - it will be shown with a white plus sign in the tree view.

Jill Farr Thanks for the advice Liivi. I'm not sure as I'm new to Geni but I thought the messages must have been generated by Geni as I couldn't think why my father's brother would have wanted to ask my husband's brothers to join his tree the day he joined mine, but perhaps he did send the message. However I think I'll try the trial Pro membership and split the tree as our sides are growing fast and there is no reason for the rest of my relatives to know or care about my husband's relatives as they are only related to our children.

Richard Tozer I think I know what's happened, at least the same thing has happened to me.
On the right of the invite page: http://www.geni.com/invite/family
There is a box that says "Some of your family members have email addresses but have not been invited yet.
Clicking the "View and invite them" button in that box will list all of the people in your family group, that you (or anyone else) has entered email addresses for, but haven't accepted. It allows you to send another invitation / reminder to them. By default everyone in the list is selected. So it is quite easy to send invitations to a large group of possibly quite distant relatives, depending how your family group is set up.
Seems to happen with new users, so perhaps Geni directs people to this page when they're getting started?
