Jessica Stanton Finally, at least it's not just me!

Dawn Kasper Can no longer add 5th generation and above. Is the free version of Geni limited to 4 generations now?
-
susan miller I can't add anymore either. Why

Jeff, Geni Curator They've changed the access on free accounts, which limits them from building above the family group level.

Sylvia del Carmen Bain Rojas Why should Geni put a limit of the number of generations we would like to add to our tree if we're able to do so, counting with the necessary and backed data?
-
Jeff, Geni Curator It's certainly a controversial move on Geni's part based on user feedback. Their general reasoning is that the vast majority of free users don't build beyond that level and those that do are in most cases duplicating profiles that already exist, creating more work for merges which they can't identify or complete. If you're a pro user, then you have the ability to see the duplication and act on all the merges to connect your tree. As Noah stated in his CEO blog post, they are looking at other options and we hope to hear something soon on this.

Gayle Solum (Krogstad) I am totally disgusted with geni in putting a limit on the # of generations a person is able to add in the free version of geni. I have been a member since 2008 and been working diligently to add my entire family tree.....now when I have that information I am not able to include. I am VERY upset.....I wish I'd have know about this before I did all of this research. Totally upset....may have to delete the entire tree....not good business....

Richard L Frank It is totally rotten of Geni to sucker us into send all our ancestor information in to you, and now we have to pay you to use our information. I no longer want you to have any of my information If it isn't deleted I will notify my US Congressman, and the Attorney General of Pennsylvania to see if something can't be done about this. When "we" sent our family information in about two years ago we were not told that when you get enough of our ancestors information we would be charged a monthly fee to use it.

Sylvia del Carmen Bain Rojas I do completely agree this is not fair at all. In Chile, at least, this is considered ilegal as only one of the partners acted without the consentment of the other. Isn't the same in your country. Would I have known this before, I wouldn't done my family tree through Geni. I use to work with fair people or organization and, on fair basis.
It would be advisable that Geni reconsidered what they're doing and act as they should. Was this planned by industrial psychologists? First, make people enthusiastic about getting involved in your plan and then, ...change the rules and make them pay if they want to continue gathering information about their family and giving it free to you.
So, now I suddenly realize I've been cheatted or I'm still to innocent!
Best Regards,
Sylvia

Nita Kulkarni I think this is very very sad. I cannot add more than 5 generations above to my tree and the trouble I took to get that information! I do not see how this benefits Geni. The whole idea of a tree is to get as many ancestors as possible. I have opened a free account on ancestry.com now and plan to make another tree there, a proper one with all my ancestors. However I am not planning to invite anyone there as I have already invited scores of people on Geni and they have accepted. I guess I will just to the ancestry thing on my own now and print it out and send it to everybody by post. I have no intention of trying Geni Pro as it is not affordable. Worst comes to worst, I will do everything manually, print out a hard copy. Thats how it was done earlier anyway.

Jeff, Geni Curator You guys are getting out of hand.. Geni has not denied you access to any of your information. You can still access and manage any of the profiles you added, permissions did not change in that regard. You can also export all your data through GEDCOM and move it to anywhere you like. They have the right to charge for certain functionality, that's how they survive continuing to provide services. You can also get the less expensive Plus account that allows you to build out your tree as much as you want.
