Cannot add an existing child to an existing family

I have attempted to add an existing child to an existing set of parents using the tree via the 'Map these People' and dragging the child to mother/father. It just wants to merge both people instead of adding the couple's child. What so I do?

  "Map These People" is for creating new connections (in addition to existing, for example when marring cousins http://help.geni.com/entries/431691-how-to-marry-cousins). 

  Click on the X in top right hand corner to remove the box from the side.
