Free Geni tree like in 2007

My idea is your past idea when you started this site. It was ease to free build tree and to invite our family to the tree. Now we don't have chance to add anybody because if I want add my cousin I have to pay for it. I understand that you want earn money but please be fair. Ability to add family to my tree it's not "pro" or "vip" option. It's basic genealogical option.

My idea:

Free tree:

- free adding members

- free photos storage

- free relationship path

- advertisements

- no historical resources

 

Paid option:

- no adds

- professional genealogical supports

- acces to historical documents

- merging (?)

- statistics

- posters,

- family games,

- family news (?)

- family contests

- advance photo organizer

- help face recognize

- genealogical maps

  i would even agree if geni allowed for example new basic users to add 100 people without any restrictions, and after that only 5-10 people per month. If you already added 100 people i guess you don't have that much to add at once anymore, at least in my case.

  and it would be great if there was some kind of "prepaid" option instead of an annual subscription. i mean i would like to have an option to pay for only one month of pro, because i don't use geni regularly, so a pro account from time to time would be ok for me.

  It's month after this horrible decision. I'f you don't want to change rules you should change name your site. In 2007 I joined to Geni.com - now it's completely different site.

  I too have a very big family.  It's unfair of genie to have collected all our information for free and now turn around and expect us to pay large sums of money to access the information we provided.  As a senior I cannot pay this kind of fee. I agree we should have the option to pay a small sum when we access the information.  Had I known that my years of hard work would be inaccessible I would have printed it up.

  sheila - You should still be able to access the information.  The restriction is on Adding Profiles, not seeing and editing the ones already added.    If you cannot access profiles within your Max Extended Family and/or that you are a manager of, that is a serious Bug, and you can report it under "Bug Reports".   And mergers should not eliminate you as a Manager - so if you were a manager, you should still be one.

  It is easy to have over 200 in your family tree over 4-5 generations (grandchildren to grandparents)  and then you normally can link to many existing names on geni. The fees for a PRO account, about 80 euros (100 USD) per year has no relevance to the possibility and limited pleasure,  to feed in people born and dead 1900-2012 with limited p public information as laws demand.

  Second BIG problem I see is that many researchers (most names on geni,com) use married names as entry while standard should be born and married to NN. Do people want to have their files incorporated with files like Joe Smith married with Mary Smith (born Jones) and not married with Mary Jones as when you investigate further on her side you have to dig in old Jones and not Smith files. Is there a solution to this dilema?  If not prefer other sysstems like Brother'sKeeper with a USD45 one time fee for complete service.

  Erik, Geni has different fields for married and birth name.  You can display these however you like in your tree and on the profile by customizing your preferences.  So if you only wish to see the birth name in all CAPS for example, you can do this.  See http://www.geni.com/account_settings/name_preferences
