My family in Norway started a tree. I opened an account in English and they added me to their tree. I was asked to merge the accounts, but now my account is in Norwegian. How do I participate as an English language user while so many in the family need Norwegian language use?

Just change your language to whatever you want, either in the language setting in the menu that pops up when clicking on your name in the upper right corner, or by clicking on some of the most popular Geni languages listed in gray at the bottom of every Geni page.
it's not resolve the problems with merge and seach.
I think better way is to support two names / to forms / on two language in profile at least. One in English for merge and international searh, second as locfle but with merge and searh oppotunity too.
I would prefer that my name is independent of language, but from looking on your name you probably ask or alternate alphabets, like Cyrillic?

Yes. I know it and use cyrillic as well.
A problem is part of my family uses cyrillic names and they have alternative way of writing in the passoprts, but only one is useful for searching as I understand, only one is NAME in the system. I am ready to use both forms but I have not this oppotuity.
Your idea "I would prefer that my name is independent of language" is greate but I don't know how to realize it :-(.
Take a closer look: A profile have an alternate name section. Just fill inn the full alternate names there, comma separated.
The names you enter there will go into the search index, but unfortunately not yet a part of profile matching
