Jeff, Geni Curator Collaboration is the main focus of Geni, so people within your family group will have the ability to edit those profiles as well as curators (http://www.geni.com/company/privacy). Outside your family group, public profiles will allow editing of basic data (reversible) to members connected into that tree and full editing to collaborators. Sourcing your data is the best thing you can do, which is a good way to maintain that data from any merges of identical profiles in other tree branches. Another thing that can be done is curators have the ability to make a profile MP (Master Profile) and lock fields (or the entire profile). So you could send us a message when you have a profile you want turned into a Master Profile (http://www.geni.com/discussions/83475). It sounds like your attention to detail and accuracy is exactly what we need in the world tree - creating a single document of record. If that is not what you're looking for, then I would suggest MyHeritage, where you have your own isolated tree, where you and your wife could work.
As for the location services, I believe Geni uses Google, which I think only applies to current Geography. So you have to manually enter the fields if it doesn't detect the correct location.
