What does '[.' mean when in front of a Name?

I have had a request to make a profile public and in front of the surname is this '[.' Can somebody please enlighten me as to what it means?

  Might be dependent on the language it was entered as.. perhaps right to left based on a unicode character?  Or, it just might be something that can be deleted.  It's not anything that Geni adds that I know about.
