My girlfriend noted her profile is publicly visible through google, so as mine, without any our confirmation. We was so angry, we deleted our Geni profiles. But what a surprise, public accounts are still there. We cannot reopen account and join the tree because there is nobody to take us back.
Please, can you tell me, what we should do to remove them? Thanks
You should have just updated your privacy settings. Like Facebook, when you join, your name and profile picture become visible, but that is an optional choice which can be changed in account preferences. Some people see it on Google, click through and think they're viewing what the public would see, which is not the case if you're logged in. Anyway, when you closed your account, it did make it totally private, however Google is not Geni. Google indexes a website only so often and the cache is updated periodically, meaning it is still visible on Google for a period of time even after it is inaccessible on Geni. Wish you would have asked the question first, or read the FAQ or reviewed your privacy settings before jumping to close your account. Google will clear it's cache soon enough, but there are ways to ask Google to do it sooner (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/removals?hl=en&pli=1).
Thank you very much for your quick answer. Maybe its our fault, we missunderstood philosophy of Geni. Anyway problem we have now is not on the Google's side. It's not about Google's cache or my browser's cache. Geni is still providing data of our deleted profiles (I have URLs of them) and we would like Geni to remove them.
Yes, if your tree is a shared one, it does not delete the profiles, as that would damage the family tree for the other members of your family (they'd likely recreate them). So what it does is just makes them private (for non-family members they are only visible via a direct link, only show the name, and not indexed by search engines). If you don't want to be listed in your family's tree, it's usually best to ask a family member to delete it. Otherwise, they're going to come yelling to Geni that some Curator is deleting people from their tree (as they'll get notification), creating a bit of drama for me trying to help out. While there are three Ondřej Míchal profiles on Geni and I can find, I don't see that any of them were active recently or closed. I also can't find it via Google, so perhaps you could provide that url and I'll take a look.
Also, in case you pass this on to family members that don't want their name indexed by Google (which was intended to allow other family members to find you), you can turn off just the indexing of search engines in the permissions settings (http://www.geni.com/account_settings/permissions) by unchecking the option "Let the public search for me (profile privacy settings apply)".
In attached screenshot you can see google result in brand new firefox profile (no history, not logged to google etc.), but that profile is there. Here are the URLs:

That account is still active as is your wife's, though neither account has been logged in since 2010. Perhaps you closed other accounts, as it's not odd to have multiple accounts. For your account, if you close it, it should delete the entire tree as you're the only member of it. As for your wife's profile, that's a completely different tree (where you don't have a profile), likewise though, she's the only member so if she closes the account it will delete the entire tree. This is not something I can do for you - I can't delete active accounts. You can try to reclaim your old passwords and either change your permissions & privacy settings or close the accounts. Linda Fromm There are 3 profiles on Geni with the name Linda Fromm. None of them are managed by you so you can not delete it. Contact the manager and ask him to delete it.
