Why limit search for living people?

Regarding the Geni-MyHeritage merger,

". . . just like living people from MyHeritage are not searchable on Google, we will do the same for Geni.com."

 

NO, NO, NO! Please make this an option attached to the profile of the profile manager. Let me choose to make "my" living people all searchable, or all non-searchable. And put a "Make this profile publicly searchable (or non-searchable)" option on each living person's profile. Of course, any living person who has claimed his or her profile should be able to choose between the two.

  I had the same reaction when I met with Noah Tutak and MyHeritage CEO Gilad Japhet yesterday.  But Gilad feels very strongly about it.  Claimed profiles (users) can still elect to be public and searchable.  Also Master Profiles will be public and searchable.

  Randy, thanks. Well, Gilad gets his way, of course. From my point of view, this train has already left the station. No living person is safe from data-gathering by people who are determined to get the facts. This is my strong belief. Hiding a Geni/MyHeritage name from Google ensures only that a searcher might not learn that the person has an online family tree profile. On the other hand, if this privacy measure  results in participation by someone who otherwise would not join, that's a plus.
