I didn't create an account. I didn't even know GENi existed! Yet GENi presume to create one for me, therefore they have responsibility to remove it. This is an abuse of my privacy. Who the hell do GENi think they are!!! GENi created the software so GENi have the resources to resolve this. Don't ask me to sign in to an account I never asked for. If you allow others to create an account for me without my permission, then GENi must take responsibility

Jeff, Geni Curator Geni doesn't create an account for you. You can only create an account for yourself. Your family member can create a profile for you - it's their family tree. And they have the ability to invite you into that tree by entering your email, so it becomes your tree as well, which will create an account if you log in and change your password. If you don't want it, don't accept it. If it's open, close it (http://www.geni.com/account_settings/close_account). Don't get mad at the service provider just because your family wants to invite you to their free family tree.

Richard Barrie If, as you say, Geni doesn't create an account for me and I can only create an account for myself, then why have Geni given me an account including a password? I had never, ever, even heard of Geni let alone entered their site! And if I actually don't have an account how come I need to open it in order to close it? Your logic is flawed - and yes I am mad at Geni because Geni created their system and have the arrogance to presume I will want to be included. You didn't ask if I wanted - you simply created an account. What arrogance!

Jeff, Geni Curator I said your family member created a profile of you in their family tree, to which they added your email with the goal of inviting you to join the tree. It is their tree, their profile of you - it exists with or without you. Geni didn't create it. They only send you an invitation on behalf of the family member who requested it, which includes a way for you to access the profile they created and allow you to create an account on Geni by confirming it is you and setting the password. You don't need to open an account to close it. Your family member will continue to manage that profile until you create an account and fully claim it. If you do create an account and don't want it, then you can close it. They created the system to allow family members to invite other family members - it is your family member that assumed you wanted to be included, not Geni - they just allowed you to access the profile so that you could claim it (creating an account).

Jeff, Geni Curator Exactly how would a system work that, as you describe, that assumed the person didn't want to be included when a family member specifically sends you an invitation to see your tree? Should they not send the invitation? Should they not allow you to see your tree that the family member created for you? If they send you an invitation and allow you to see the tree the family member created, how would they allow you to access it? Some temporary url and password associated with the invite. If you want to be a member, what is a simple way to allow them to create an account? Perhaps just setting the password and confirming they are the person in the profile. You're obviously upset, but technically, I have no idea how such a solution based on your assumptions would even work. The process I describe here is what is going on - feel free to offer a better solution that allows the 99% who do join to do so easily.
