Hi, I created my family tree a few years ago and haven't used it for a while. Now I see that someone I have never heard of (apparently a third cousin once removed) is listed as the profile manager for much of my family, including most people I entered myself and members of my husband's family who are not related to this person. How do I change that?

Jeff, Geni Curator Florence, it's possible your tree was reported as abandoned, in which case Geni tries to find the closest active family member in your family group. Since he was already in your family group, he already had the ability to edit those profiles - the only thing that was added was his name as a contact, since at the time, you were no longer an active member. Any family member in your group ( http://www.geni.com/account_settings/family ) , which usually includes in-laws out to first cousin, could become a manager just by creating a duplicate and merging it. Geni is built on collaboration, so inactive members are an issue for others that may want to contact someone in that family group for merging of duplicate trees. So essentially, it just adds the active person as a contact. You can request he relinquish management via the actions menu, management options, but again, it's not changing much. It appears your husband has a duplicate tree managed by Gary Leverence that could be merged. There is also a pending merge that you've requested on your parents profiles - I'll go ahead and take care of that since the tree is already merged and they're no longer active on Geni.

Florence Diane Mitchell Thank you for answering that and for fixing my parents' profiles. I still don't quite understand how or why someone can "take over" another living person's immediate family group without their knowledge or permission. I do like the concept of Geni, but it is no longer very functional for those who can't afford the expensive membership, or who do not think a fee that high is worth the value it provides. A lower fee might encourage broader participation.

Jeff, Geni Curator Usually someone reports a tree as abandoned after getting no response from the existing manager. As for permission, he was already in your family group and already had permission to edit or become a manager of those profiles. It's also possible that it was a duplicate tree merged, adding the other person. In either case, it doesn't really change the access, it just adds another contact for collaboration and merge requests.
You stated Geni was "no longer functional". I'd like to understand what service was available that is no longer available that is causing you issue. Geni has continued to add additional features to free members and they can do a lot more than they use to. In fact, the pro has become less valuable because they've made many prior pro features available for free. The primary function of pro membership now is premier support, searching, and viewing tree matches - power user features along with the data subscription, which provides records and additional research. I can't think of anything that was free that is no longer free, but can think of many features that have been added and lots of new value added in paid data services.

Jeff, Geni Curator If you want to reduce the size of your family group, those that have the permission to manage or edit your private profiles, you can do so in your settings. http://www.geni.com/account_settings/family
