Unicode/UTF-8 characters not showing in basic tree print out

I am able to enter non-English font characters in my tree and they display perfectly fine while in my tree viewer page. However, when I go to print the basic tree to pdf, the characters don't display. The space where the characters would be just deletes. For example, on my name would display online as "Christine Marcella DeVillier - Lim Thlel Yan (林小英)" then when the pdf creation happens, it shows "Christine Marcella DeVillier - Lim Thlel Yan ()". I am on a macbook pro with software and language packs all current and I made sure I got the Chinese language pack for Adobe installed. What is happening that makes it unable to render the Chinese characters in the pdf version of the tree? My computer has Chinese characters as an installed language. My tree is useless without complete names in native languages.
