How to take over someones manager-role

My father has started our family tree February 16, 2007. He is now 97 years old, and reluctant to face facts, I must anticipate his death within a few years. Furthermore he can’t remember his password.

He is the manager of several profiles in this tree, which may create a problem after his death regarding updates of these profiles.

I myself have submitted and manage 85 profiles in our tree, but for instance I can’t register the death of his deceased wife (which leads to mails regarding her birthday and their wedding day, and this is not pleasant, as we have not yet totally coped with her death two years ago) or delete her Email.

Would it be possible for me to take over his managed profiles (preferably already now for me to correct the above mentioned issue)?

  Annette, if your father's wife's profile is claimed, then you'll need to report it as deceased (since only she can edit her profile).  Actions, Report, Deceased  See: http://help.geni.com/entries/499442-How-can-I-update-the-profile-for-someone-who-is-deceased-

  As for your father's profiles, there should be an option under the actions menu on one of his profiles titled "Abandoned Tree".  If you click that, it should try to reassign his profiles to the closest active relative, which should be you.

  Alternatively, your father could reset his password if he has the same email he used to register.  Once logged in, he could close his account, which will ask him to choose a family member to transfer management.

  If you don't see the abandoned tree option, let me know, that might be a curator only feature.

  Jeff, thank you for quick response.

  My knowledge of the English language is insuffient, as I don't know, what you mean by "profile is claimed". She hasn't herself submitted the profile, it is my fathers doing (she wasn't a fan of computers) and I am registered as manager along with my father and one of my sons.

  I don't understand the plural mentioned "your father's profiles", as he has just one.

   

  Reg. my father's wife: If I use, Actions, Report, Deceased, will it then be possible for me to register her dates regarding death and burial?

  Reg. my father: I can see the abnadoned tree option - so far so good. If I use "Abandoned Tree" or he closes the account, what will happen? Will he disappear from our tree or just from his manager-role? And if that's the case will his children/grandchildren/great grandchildren disappear, too?

  The email (stillstronghr@hotmail.com) he used in 2007 is no longer active, and as I can't change the email in his profile, resetting the password is not an option. His new email is stillstrong@gmail.com.

  What I mean by profile is claimed is that there is a little blue box around it - she logged in at one point, which hands control over to her and prevents you from editing it.  If I'm looking at the correct tree, Tove has a claimed profile and yes, reporting her as deceased as described will "unlock" the profile so you (and your family members) can edit it.

  When I said "your father's profiles", I meant the profiles for which he is manager.  In either case, abandoned tree or closing the account, the profile will remain and no profiles will be deleted.  It would just be the manager role on other profiles that change.

  I also noticed in that tree that the distant ancestors as private.  I would advise against that.  They're part of the public record and there is little reason a person from the 1800s should be private.  The setting is intended for close relatives, which you prefer not yet to make public.  We'd prefer all deceased to be public, but understand there are some situations where this is undesired.  Making long deceased ancestors private goes against what we're trying to do here in a shared collaborative world tree.

  Thank you, Jeff, for the explanation of "claimed" and "profiles". 

  My father prefers the "close account solution", to be absolutely sure, that management is transferred to me, but we can't do it, as my father doesn't remember his password and as I mentioned, he has a new email, that is not registered with Geni. Are you able to help us by changing his email from stillstronghr@hotmail.com to stillstrong@gmail.com?

  If we use "abandoned tree", he is afraid, that managemant is transferred to someone else in the family.

  I appreciate your advise regarding privacy and basic I agree. It has been done to prevent members of the tree from appearing in different search-machines, as some from my family - including my father - are not interested in sharing for instance the family's habit to have children out of wedlock. My father is a very proud man, you could say, that he is a bit snobbish, but I love him anyway and therefore I respect his wishes regarding this matter. So for now, I'll leave it as it is. I hope, that you'll understand.

  I can't change his email address, but we might be able to overwrite it.  Add a new profile for your father as a new husband of your mother (or Tove).  Enter his new email address into the profile and have him "claim" it - login, set password.  Then I can merge his two profiles, which should keep the login from his latest account.  Then he can close that account.

  On the privacy, what you want to do to avoid having your profile index by Google is to change your permissions.  http://www.geni.com/account_settings/permissions  Uncheck the option "Let the public search for me (profile privacy settings apply)".

  For the older profiles (earlier than 1850), just know that it can prevent collaboration with others that share these common ancestors, and that at some point, these settings may be overridden as needed for the world tree to function in a shared environment.

  Jeff, a new profile is added as my mothers husband. I am going to visit my father tomorrow, so he can claim this profile. I'll contact you, when this is done - in the hope, that you will help us merging the two profiles.

  Sure - have him do one more thing before I merge.  Change his password.  Right now it's "semi-claimed" (note you're still listed as the manager).  https://www.geni.com/account_settings/email_password

  Sorry, we forgot as we also had to solve a problem with a new shaver, he has bought. I'm not with him now, but will visit him sunday. Just one question, if he hasn't a password, how can he see his profile? I guess, that the former link (which led directly to the profile) he used, is now inactive.

  Yes, the link should work or if he goes to the site, it will hopefully remember him.  If not, he can just tell it he forgot his password and it will send it to his email.

  Just a FYI, my father went crazy adding hundreds of family members to our tree but hasn't managed their profiles for years.

  So I thought I'd take over as the family scribe and pressed "Abandoned Tree"

  Was pretty horrified when the management of all those profiles went to my cousin. Why did management go to my cousin, rather than me?

   

  Note: Fortunately I have a close relationship with my cousin and asked him to just add me as collaborator.

  hi I removed myself as manager on one of the profiles on a tree I created and now I dont know how to reverse this action, please help me

  If it's a claimed profile (another Geni member), then it is their profile.  If it's within your family group, then management is not likely a hindrance to performing an action.  If it's outside your family group and managed by another or other Geni members, then you'll have to request to be added as a manager via the Actions menu.

  Elizabeth, If the person is a Geni member, then they'll need to set their privacy settings.

  Also, they'll want to check their permissions. In particular, the option "Let the public search for me (profile privacy settings apply)" if you don't want Google to find your Geni profile (note that it takes time for Google cache to expire).

  By default, any non-claimed living profile is private.
