How can I organize documents chronologically?

I would like to be able to organize documents chronologically. Any suggestions? As additional documents are added, they are frequently not in logical order. For instance, a death notice might appear before a WW1 draft notice.

I know you can add a date to a document, but not sure if that will change the order. You can associate documents with events and then view the events chronologically.
