Can't merge my tree with my husband's tree to make one tree

I started my first tree using one of my email addresses and had my husband as the main profile person (I was at his mother's home, gathering information from her).  As time went on, the tree got a little "messy", so I decided to start another tree using another of my email addresses, and used myself as the main profile person, with the hopes of going "one by one" and plucking information off the "messy" tree and entering it into the "cleaned up" tree.  Well, now I've got two "messy" trees and am thinking about just deleting the original "messy" tree and saying "to heck" with information I might lose.  I've tried "merging" the two trees by adding the il0vebunk0 email address to the account under my other email address, but it says "can not merge with wife/husband".  Is there any hope?  I am frustrated.
