One person in my tree is the ex-domestic partner of my brother. I
m happy to leave her there because she and my brother have a son. But one off her children by another man have added many of their relatives - basically created their family tree - in the midst of mine. How do I detach that tree from mine and make mine closed to further changes by anyone but myself?
I would like the answer to this as well. Several members have added people to my tree and they are way off on relationships. I now have the same person listed as a sibling to himself and he is married to his brother. Another person has a woman married and having children at 2 years old. There are several names that are repeated throughout my family tree, such as fathers/sons and people are not checking their dates. My tree has been expanded back to the 1600s which would be great if I could confirm these are the correct relatives. It is ridiculous that people can mess up all my work and I cannot easily fix it.
I thought the main benefit of GENI was that a person was generally only in it once - with all their connections. For me having spouses (ex or current) family adding their information, descendants, ancestors etc is a bonus as between us we have double the research capability. I know it is a big issue when they enter garbage or non-factual information. For anyone adding into mine I contact them and between us we fix it. I too make errors when adding someone and sometimes GENI adds it differently than I was expecting.
Other software providers like Ancestry keep each tree completely separate - which is great for control but I have found that people just use my data and don't connect with me which means that I don't get anymore information from them. Also it means that if I find their information on Ancestry I can't be notified if they change it so have to regularly go back and look at their entire tree again.
