Is this site still popular and how do I start a new tree.

Hello all, I am seeing a lot of older dates for entries and am wondering if this site is still being used. I have many more branches of my tree I would like to share, each in it's own tree. Is this possible? I am afraid I have not seen a gedcom down load area. Is this possible? Other then Ancestry.com are there any other genealogy sites out there, free that I can share my information? Thanks to whomever answers.
