I thought i could do this by merging - but then I understood that the merge was only to be done if separate details had been added on the one person - hence, merge the one file. I obviously don't want to do that. I want my tree details to link up with another person's tree details because the data matches.

Oton Zagorc Merging is the way to go. When you initiate a merge the details of both profiles are displayed side by side so that you can review them before confirming. If there are more overlapping persons Geni will prompt you to merge them as well. In case the merged profiles have different details you get to choose which ones to keep (Resolve conflicting Data). And after the merge don't forget to View Nearby Merge Issues and resolve them.
Since the profile you want to merge is in a different tree you may need assistance from a curator. Feel free to ask if you can't complete the merge.
