Merged profile changes path of decent

I added someone to my tree, who would be my 2nd cousin 5 times removed, however when I merged this person with an existing profile, it altered the path completely and now makes me some obscure relative with 37+ steps. Can anyone help with how to fix this? It also altered the path to his father (my first cousin 5 times removed) even though I entered his profile myself. Any help would be much appreciated!!

  If you provide a link to the profile or father, I can refresh the path.

  Or you might be able to refresh the path - look for a little refresh icon next to the path.

  I did not - maybe just post the name of the profile and other identifying info like dates, spouse or parents.
