To avoid merges where two sibling have the same names, e.g. when one died just after death and a subsequent child was given the same names, i would propose an icon warning about "Died Young, Namesake sibling". I know that the sibling often is listed among the rest, and discovering a sibling with the same name should be a warning to investigate further before merging profiles, but this is not fool proof and its time consuming to read through all the siblings, compare apparent identical profiles and so on. If Geni can spot namesake listings with the same parent data, but differing birthrates and where one has died before a certain age is reached (the birthdate of the namesake) then a warning could be listed.

Catherine Erin Serafina Liora Spiceland (Pinder) Until this is a formal feature, anyone who wants is welcome to tag profiles to my "Died Young" photo. http://www.geni.com/photo/view/6000000003481510305?photo_id=6000000010532505242

Anne Frances Ida Samachson Catherine, I can't see your photo. When I click on the link you posted, I get a message saying:

Catherine Erin Serafina Liora Spiceland (Pinder) Anne, it looks like we're collaborating. Maybe you need family group access to tag someone else's photos. I know other people have tagged mine before. In any case, please feel free to yank it and upload it again if you can do that. Here are more links to try:

Thank you Catherine

Eldon Clark (Geni volunteer curator) Putting Died Young in the suffix box will show up on all merges
-
Judith Judi Elaine (McKee) Burns we still need all the warnings we can get in this area - as many still are determined to merge these d. young all together - - they need to be forced to read and compare data -
I had several in one branch that had 2-4 children named the same name until one lived to carry on the name or they just gave up on having a living child by that name - no matter how many times I added a deceased child back in it was merge either with the living child or another deceased child - their are people who just do not read no matter how much you annotate or document in the about me section...
we need the drop down menu box after the death date - that has
1) d. unmarried
2) died without issue
3) d as infant 0-3
4 d. as child 4-12
50 d. as young adult 13-18/21
some where I found the distinction between the infant age, childhood, young adult -
also this would be of tremendous help in knowing that this branch has ended and no longer needs to be chased down .
-
Eldon Clark (Geni volunteer curator) Judi, Any of those phrases can be put in the suffix field and will show up to use in merges. The big problem is, some people don't read.
-
Catherine Erin Serafina Liora Spiceland (Pinder) Eldon, also "Died Young" is not a valid suffix or title, so many people delete it out of the suffix field and put it into the About Me.
-
Judith Judi Elaine (McKee) Burns HORRAH!!!! Erin - I hate putting stuff in the suffix area that does not belong - but to prevent VERY BAD merges at times - there is no place to put them -
I am still totally for and will champaign to the very end for what i suggested -
we need the drop down menu box after the death date - that has
1) d. unmarried
2) died without issue
3) d as infant 0-3
4 d. as child 4-12
5) d. as young adult 13-18/21
Is it to much to ask for - for the ends of a means - CLARITY of an event as to when it happened?
-
Eldon Clark (Geni volunteer curator) I don't think it belongs in the suffix field either but as a temp measure until there is a better method that will show up on merges, I use it. Especially works when you have the cases where the same name was used until there was a survivor.I have seen families where there were 3 or even 4 of those. How many bad merges do you think were caused by this type of situation?
-
Judith Judi Elaine (McKee) Burns a whole _ _ _ _ of alot = was the greatest feud in the Smith line of the Smith-Hinkley line sides merging every John and Mary smith together even if the corssed the generational boundaries - thats when i satrted doing it instead of sitting here pulling my hair out, cryin and screaming at the computer screen
-
Judith Judi Elaine (McKee) Burns Still would like to see this as an option Stillborm, died as infant, died as child, died young, died witout issue.
a screen shot of the main data entry table it covers much more than this issue but is request ideas for improvements that have been ignored over the past year and a half or more

Maven B. Helms I've been putting "Died young" in the "birth name" field. Since these profiles don't have spouses or children, this generally doesn't cause serious problems.
-
Eldon Clark (Geni volunteer curator) Maven. Died young is not a name and the birth name field is where the name the person was born with goes.
-
Maven B. Helms I wasn't the only one doing it - in fact I think I got the idea from others. Maybe we better have a Discussion about this.
Frankly, one thing Geni desperately needs is a common stock of icons that people can draw on so everybody doesn't have to come up with their own for every little thing. :-P
-
Eldon Clark (Geni volunteer curator) In regard to using the Birth name please see here. The project name is confusing but the first page covers it perfectly. http://www.geni.com/discussions/109370

Volodya Mozhenkov @Catherine Erin Serafina Liora Spiceland (Pinder)
Right now Geni has disabled the ability of another person to mark somebody to see another person's images. So you get the 'error' when trying to access the picture q;-(=
