When someone reports a person as deceased, Geni should immediately disable the birthday and anniversary notifications. That way the delay period between reporting and account deactivation is not as critical for preventing family notification.

Bjørn P. Brox You are talking about claimed profiles?
Isn't that a chicken and egg problem, - what comes first?
WHEN a help request pops up in the queue to be processed it is unlikely that they put it back in line again to be processed later on.

Jeff, Geni Curator Bjorn, this would be an automated task that happens when the user reports the profile as deceased and would have no effect on the Geni queue. The Geni staff would not have to do this manually.

Bjørn P. Brox OK, you mean when people are using the report option at profile level and not as a help request.
Agree, - that should probably be doable.
The report option for vandalism the curators have an option to immediately suspend the users edit-access except to his/hers own profile at the moment he/she get reported (but they also have the option to restore it).

Liivi Murumets Anniversary notifications should be disabled then as well.

Jeff, Geni Curator Thanks Liivi, I've updated the feature request.

Jessica Levant Reply to Jeff Gentes - since I am logged in and it is the tree I created (my name's tree) and it is my mother who died, I don't see the issue of being able to add in the date of her death. I would not expect to be able to do the same on anyone else's tree - then it would be information to share. I set up this tree = years ago when it was straightforward and useful; I want to be able to make changes as needed to MY tree. I have already turned off the birthday announcement feature, but that is a minor thing. She died yesterday and it should be recorded. (And I didn't have emails turned on since it drove my mother crazy to get all the emails).

Jeff, Geni Curator Jessica, there is no "MY tree" - that's just a label at the top of your tree and has no technical meaning related to permissions. The Geni software knows you're in the same "family group". This seems like too wide an area, since it includes forth cousins and closers to automatically close someones account. Perhaps what is needed is another feature request. If the family member reporting the deceased person is a direct relative (spouse, parent, or child), then it could automatically close the account. If it's a second cousin or less, maybe it could allow it to be marked as deceased with a date, but perhaps leave the account active until Geni can review it. Maybe there is a technical in between...

John Raymond Fenner The fact that Geni has failed to act on my advice of the death of my first cousin Sandra Lance on December 1, 2011 but continues to promote the celebration
of her 48th wedding anniversary on February 5, 2012 speaks volumes for the inadequacies of the present system.

Steve Frustrated as there is not a way that I can figure out to contact Geni...I have attempted to inform them of the death of my cousin that I originally entered on our tree. After joining Geni he became the profile manager and since died. I have tried to submit the death date but it does not seem to accept it. It stays the same box, submit or cancel even with letting it sit for awhile to process. I attempted to send an e-mail to alert them but it was returned only to be referred to Google Help. This is my cousin; I cannot imagine how difficult this is for his spouse and children to receive birthday reminders!!! I was able to unmark the box in his profile to not send reminders but this is sad that death information cannot be added immediately.
