To greatly reduce duplicates, whenever someone is entering a new profile - Geni would automatically do a search with that information for a similar profile. If there's a close match - prompt the user to see if it is the same person (and maybe show a mini-tree view as well). If they say no, then add the record.
This will greatly reduce the amount of duplicates entered and eliminate many merge requests.
I have made a real mixture of some Talberg families. Their nodes were suddebly without any text, and I do not know how to fix it again. Here is the URL:
