I think that the page should have "First Last Name" (father's Last name) and "Second Last Name" (mother's last name) (sorry for my english, i'm from Argentina)

Bjørn P. Brox Multiple and more dynamic name fields like adding a paternal and maternal name as you mention are endlessly discussed and hopefully on the wishlist for Geni. As far as I understand a lot of new features are on hold until some fundamental core changes in data storage are completed in Geni. Stay tuned as they tend to tell ;-.)

Yao Liu I would "like" Bjorn's comment. Names don't just come in First Middle Last as Geni pretends the world is. Ideally, if a profile is customized, any profile added as his parent / sibling / spouse / child shall be customized the same way as default.
More pertaining to your question, a child added to a couple should automatically have their paternal and maternal surname fields populated. This also applies to other customized fields, such as an "ancestral town" that is important in some cultures.

Bjørn P. Brox In the Nordic counties having and automatic populating a paternal and maternal name field would be fundamentally wrong, simply because we don't use it and probably not even have heard about such a tradition.
It's like forcing a married name on women: It should not be an automatic option, it should only a field you can populate your self if you have sources on a person telling that it was used. Before someone breaks in an tell that Geni does that for the last name field on women you should know that they also give you an option to disable it.
The good news is that Geni seem to go for implementing a dynamic language dependent display name section where you can add a specific way of display a name depending the language selection of the viewer. This is especially useful for those who use another alphabet so you don't have to compromise like Liu Yao (it is actually Yao Liu for some, but that is another discussion) have done in his name.

Yao Liu Geni should NOT force anything; maternal names don't even appear for Nordic profiles. Users should have as much freedom and flexibility as possible, and regional or period Curators make the templates (that should be what Curators are for).
A new profile would adopt the template that it's closest to, but a big question is what are we going to do with old profiles?

Ignacio Luis Laos Well, in my country Argentina, now the kids can have the mother's Last Name, this is why I think that some people can have their mother's last name, but only if they want it. About the old profiles, not necessary need to have the other last name... I think that the family of the child must decide if their son/daughter will have another Last Name.. The traditions and cultures are changing with the time. Right now, a lot of kids in the world have their father' Last Name, and the Mother's Last Name.
Once again, I apologize if my English is hard to understand :)

Bjørn P. Brox There is just one important rule when entering profiles in your family tree: Do not fabricate facts like assuming a paternal or maternal or even a married name just because it is a tradition.
You should only enter the names as listed in your primary sources.
