Remove relationship on yourself (Free membership)

I know the removal of relationships (splitting the tree) is reserved for Pro members, but I was wondering if you would consider allowing it for Free members if they're trying to break a relationship on their own profile (ex-spouse/partner, no children or parent conflict).

The reason I ask is that, as a curator, it is probably one of the most repeated things I do in the Help forum - breaking a relationship from an ex-husband or an extra parent for someone. This seems like something they should be able to do for themselves on their own profile and I don't think it would lessen the value of Pro membership.

  This really should be a fundamental right. After agreeing initally to be included, I should have the ability to remove myself.

  Life changes, often in ways that we don't like. 

  But refusing to allow me to remove myself is profoundly disrespectful, and frankly feels a bit sleazy.

  Moshe (Mark) Haven Exactly what do you want to do, Remove your ex wife and her children? That will leave you with a one person tree which already  has no names and an unknown gender. If you want to just make them go away from your profile you can do that yourself. From your profile, scroll down to Immediate Family, then edit then hide any you do not want to see. I do not see any point in doing anything. Especially since you have been a Geni user for a year and sequentially done nothing except remove all data from your profile.

  Quite simple way to remove yourself: Close the account.

  I definitely think free users should be able to utilize this feature. I'll use myself as an example. I'm new to geni.com and started working on my tree a week ago. I added my great great grandfather and started adding more people to him. Well, it was actually discovered a few days later that his one wife was not my great great grandmother but he was married before her (for a very short time) and had my great grandfather and 2 other children before he married Florence "Hattie" Miller. But now I can't seem to get rid of all the relatives that I attached to Florence - like her parents, siblings, etc. Because technically they aren't my relatives now. And I just can't get rid of most of them. I definitely think even a free user should have this capability. Thanks!

  Angela - it is not as drastic as cutting a connection you need help from Pro users cur curators to solve since I assume you want to keep Florence connected as your great grandfathers second wife.
  You simply start by adding his first wife, - your great mother as you discovered, and then simply click edit on your grandfathers profile, and then select the Relationships tab. If you take a closer look you will observe that the listing of your grandfathers parents is a pull-down menu where you can just select your great grandfather and hist first wife as correct parents, then just click save.
  If you do that in tree-view you will immediately see the change.

  I spoke with Angela earlier in the week and she has since closed her account.  The collaborative platform and limitations on free accounts was not quite what she was looking for.  Since her sister has a tree on Geni, probably the best way for her to rejoin (if she'd like to) would be to ask her sister to add her email address to the profile in that tree.

  Yes, it would be very nice to have this option.

  I have stopped frequenting the site because it has been impossible for me to remove the connection to me ex-partner. The thing is he put me through some really traumatizing stuff, and and I have severed all contact with him. Except Geni won't let me do that. I am forced to see his name and be reminded of him every time I log in. Can we PLEASE get this feature ASAP?

  There is also the issue of legality. If an ex-partner turns stalker then the victim can't remove the perp from their tree - not even in order to protect themselves. That's pretty messed up. So, please, Geni, this is important to a lot of us. I, personally, would prefer to not be reminded of the abuse I went through by my ex's hands every time I'm in touch with my family.

  How can I remove one person without splitting the tree? My father added me to his tree which automatically lists my stepmother as my mom. Obviously I want to list my mom as my mother, especially since I plan to research that side.

  Erin, just add your mother as an ex-wife or ex-partner of your father.  Then edit your profile and select the relationship tab and choose the Parent pull down menu to select your father and mother from option.

  dear curators,, 

  this feature should really be a basic one. as the first comment in this topic says -- 'this really should be a basic right'.

  the idea that i can not remove an ex-partner or correct a mistake made concerning wrongly made person profiles seems ridiculous. 

  what concerns the 'mistake' profiles - it's only normal that such mistakes are made and telling users to take 'extra care' before adding anyone new won't help. a chance to correct a wrong should be at one's fingertips.

  the worst effect from this is that having no control over these features really downs the energy to work on the site which again leads to loads of partly-true/messy profiles.

  Someone who invited me t her tree  inadvertently added a wife for me in error! here is the profile ... She is not my wife! http://www.geni.com/people/Joanne-Ronay/6000000010618099620

  Uninviting me to the tree did not correct the relationship.

  I was able to delete two wrong children from the erroneous relationship ( and maybe from the tree belonging to the "wife" but a third remains . Here is a profile http://www.geni.com/people/Michelle-Ronay/6000000024464157572 She is not my daughter.

  The remove button on the relationship tab in my Profile view does not work. And there is no x in the upper right to remove these people from my tree;  there is no delete in the drop down Actions menu. In other words, all of the Help answers to how to delete a relationship are not working. I sent a message to a curator who manages a few profiles on my tree but he has not answered.

  Removing people or relationships has been has been a major issue for several years now in these forums ... I do not think it has been totally solved.

  Thank you to any curator or administrator who may be able to solve the erroneous relationship problem. Please advise.

  Liza, you have a child with your ex-husband.  In those cases, we'd want to maintain that genealogical relationship.  The relationship of ex-spouse should remove any permissions / visibility into your tree and vise versa unless that spouse was the manager of the profiles.

  Liza, - as a curator I can cut that connection for you, but in respect of your common child I am not willing to do that.

  If you don't want him visible on your profile you have the option to hide him by clicking edit in the immediate family section of your own profile.
  
  You can also visit his and his family members profiles and click Unfollow if you are following them and eventually also use check if there is a "Remove From Family Group" in the Actions menu on their profile to stop getting notifications from their activity.

  Please do NOT implement this.

  In fact what we really need is a way to prevent relationship deletion of the historical events (marriage has occured and cannot be deleted, but you can add a divorce).

  Hello, I have a basic profile and am wondering if a curator could cut the connection between my ex (K.F.) and I. We have no kids and no other connections and it's annoying seeing her there each time I work on my tree. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

  This is an old thread, but it seems most closely related to my issue. I'm married for a second time. My wife just created an account. When she logs in, she sees my ex-wife in the tree, and would rather not. How can this be best accomplished?  Thank you!

  Personally I would be very worried if someone does not accept that I have a past.
  If you and your ex have children together you should in respect of them not remove their mother.

  Sonny, I normally will disconnect but my rule is that there be no children.  It's important in the tree to maintain the proper relationships if they result in descendants.  Your ex-wife's account is essentially closed (hasn't logged in for 8 years and the account's email address is invalid).

  I added spouse and In-laws back in the day.  They have not claimed the accounts and want (vehemently) their email addresses and data removed from geni.  Is there a feature that allows me to do this? My tree link is https://www.geni.com/family-tree#6000000007016279125
