You default to husband for a female, and wife for a male - yet many marriages are single sex and folks don't take kindly to not being an option. Just make it "spouse" and the problem is solved.

Bjørn P. Brox Take a closer look the next time you edit a profile. You have multiple options for a spouse connection and gender, - just make the choice that fits you.
It is however useful for most people that married and different genders is the default, - but again: it is your personal choice what you change it to after the profile and connection is added. -
Thomas John Murphy The connection that fits a lot of same sex couples is husband or wife. I am married to my husband for years now, but the option to call him my husband in GENI is not there; I only have the choice of "partner" (I just checked it today 9-13-17).
I suggest making all options available as it's a clear "miss" on Geni's part.

Bjørn P. Brox It is the english text on the pulldown menu that is wrong/misleading, - it should say spouse instead of wife or husband. Try to change to Wife and see what is listed on the profile when done, - it will probably tell husband.

Thomas John Murphy Thanks, Tried it. It didn't work, It labels my male husband the "Wife of Thomas J. Murphy."
The drop down should just include all options.

Bjørn P. Brox I just checked your profile and the "error" was obvious, - the reason why your husband got listed as wife of was that the gender was set to female.
I have changed this for you.
