If the image (aka photo) is of an actual event, then the EXIF date and event date should be the same.
When the photo is of an ARTIFACT of the event (e.g. picture of a portrait, a gravestone, etc.), then the EXIF only provides info on the event of the "photographing". In my view, for a genealogical site, the DATE/TIME information (about the 'event of photographing an artifact') has little to no value. GPS coordinates (if present) *may* be of value, depending on the 'artifact'. For example, for a photo of a burial marker, GPS coordinates are nice. For a photo of a letter written during the World War I that I took in my house -- GPS coordinates are not only meaningless, but I may not want them associated with the photo!
On the other hand, some people actually update the EXIF with information about the subject of the photograph in addition to what the modern cameras automatically place in the EXIF.
I'm open to counter-examples, but I would like to see the options on images to be able to choose to:
a)-- delete all EXIF data (e.g. photo of a 'mobile' artifact / document)
b)-- delete all but GPS data (e.g. photo of a 'burial marker')
c)-- delete all but GPS and date/time info (privacy of the photographer of an event)
d)-- retain all EXIF info
Further, at the time of an interactive upload, those choices could be offered.
Non-interactive? Maybe default to "c" ... or, better yet, have a (new) user-specific preference which let's them decide on the default action.
