who is the real Madame Montour

My Name is Lawrence W Roos.

 

 

 

I really would appreciate someone assisting me in solving a family tree mystery regarding the true Identity of Madame Montour.

 

 

 

I am a descendent of Mary Molly Montour (Quebec) (aka Mary Catherine or Catherine Montour Rankin), Wyandot Indian of the Big Turtle Clan. Her Husband was James Rankin (Born in Ireland, work for Hudson Bay Company).

 

 

 

Her mother was French Margaret Montour and Father was Peter Quebec (aka KETERIONCHA, Katarioniecha, dit FRONTENAC?).

 

 

 

Mary Molly Montour Quebec’s daughter was Catherine Walker (Rankin) (aka Haynie?). Her burial records state that she was the great granddaughter of Madame Montour and daughter of James Rankin and Catherine Montour (Rankin).

 

 

 

Catherine Walker (Rankin) (aka Haynie?) married William A Walker and their son was William Walker JR. He was the first Provisional Governor of the Nebraska Territory (Inclusive of Kansas). Governor Walker’s ancestors were deceased when he and the remaining members of the Wyandot Tribe were removed from Ohio to Kansas.

 

 

 

Is Madame Montour the Daughter of Louis Montour (aka Louis Couc dit LaFleur) or his sister Elisabeth Couc (aka Elisabeth Isabelle Couc dit LaFleur)?

  Could you post a link to Madame Montour?  Otherwise we need to search in the Geni tree which Madame Montour you are writing about.

  Hi,

  Madame Montour thru my internet research seems to be confused between 2 ladies. The first is the daughter of Louis Couc dit Lafleur (born c 1659) who changed his name to Louis Montour around c.1682. His daughter name's is possibly Madame Catherine Montour (presumed birth 1684). The second lady is Louis Montour's sister, Elisabeth (Isabelle) Couc dit Lafleur (born 1667) who changed her last name to Montour after her brother's death in 1709. Internet sources show they have the same children.

  I have somewhat traced my Indian Blood Lineage back to around 1550, yet there is no definite results.

  This is due to the Pierre Couc dit LaFleur lineage down about 4 to 5 generations to who I believe is possibly Mary (Molly) Montour (Wyandot, Big Turtle Clan)(Rankin, married to James Rankin noted as of the Hudson Bay Co.). 

  One of the many obstacles is the daughter of James Rankin; Catherine Montour Rankin married name Walker. She is my sixth generation great grandmother (4^th Great Grandmother).

  My Tree runs smoothly below her. Here's how:

  1. Catherine Rankin is a daughter of Catherine Montour
  2. Nancy Walker is a daughter of Catherine Rankin
  3. Mary C Garrett is a daughter of Nancy Walker
  4. Charles F Gilliford is a son of Mary C Garrett
  5. Catherine Mae (May) Gilliford is a daughter of Charles F Gilliford
  6. John Walter Roos is a son of Catherine Mae (May) Gilliford
  7. Lawrence William Roos is a son of John Walter Roos

  Catherine Montour Rankin Burial Record notes the following: Daughter of James Rankin and Catherine Montour; Great-Grandmother is Madame Montour and her Aunt is the Mohawks Queen Esther of Revolutionary War fame.

  Catherine Walker's Timeline: June 4, 1770 Birth of Catherine Sandwich, Upper, Canada.  Death:  Dec 16 1844 - Upper Sandusky, Crane Township, Wyandot, Ohio, United States.

   Another site shows: Catherine Rankin was born on June 4, 1771, in Sandwich, Ontario, Canada, to Mary (Molly) Montour, age 21, and James Rankin, age 30.

  Her father James (James Rankin Hudson Bay Co, 1741–1803) passed away in 1803 in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, at the age of 62.

  One her 10 children born March 5, 1799 (her age of28) was Governor William Walker, II (1799-1874).

  After the Wyandot’s were removed from Ohio to Kansas (Kansas City, Kansas) in 1843 he became the first Provisional Governor of the Nebraska Territory- covering Kansas also before they became states.

  His Journal he kept for about 40 years has some references/information to the Rankins, Montours.

  There is so much great information available thru the internet plus ancestry sites yet so much misinformation mixing facts with fictions.

  These sites refer to Pierre Couc dit LaFleur (married Marie  Meti8ameg8k8e) (plus many spellings of last name)– Louis Couc dit LaFleur who later, around c. 1682, dropped Couc dit Lafleur last name and assume the name as Louis Montour – Madame Catherine Montour (married Hunter) – Margaret “French Margaret Montour Hunter (married Quebec) - Queen Esther Montour Quebec (married to Eghohowin), Mary Montour (married to James Rankin) and Catherine Rankin ( Married to William Walker l).

  This example of my lineage I think I have seen once before but discounted it.

  Now I am wondering if it has some value due to Queen Esther’s involvement in the Wyoming Valley Massacre which seems to have started the retaliation and removal of Indians from Pennsylvania and New York areas scattering them to the west or into Canada and also hiding their identity due to shame and or embarrassment.
