LInking to existing profiles

HI all, new user to please bear with me.  Various people have already created an existing family tree ending at my paternal grandfather.  I have just joined and created my own tree consisting of my parents and siblings.  Now I need to link my father (profile owned by me) to my grandfather's existing profile (owned by someone else) to join the broader existing family tree.

 

I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this.  The "Move this person" option doesn't give all the options it seems that it should:  when I drag my father's profile onto my grandfather's, I've seen graphics where a bunch of options are possible - father, son etc.  But all I see are "Are they the same person?".

 

It seems that I could create my own profile for my grandfather and then merge them, but that seems unnecessary.  Surely there's a way to link my father to my grandfather without creating my own grandfather and then merging with the existing?

  I have a similar question, but find that this one has languished unanswered for more than a year.

  The problem could be that that grandfather is a private profile.

  If so you could ask the manager to make the profile public or you could request co-management of that profile.

  If he manager does not  respond (give him/her some time to react, most users are not daily active) you can search for the first ancestor profile with a birth date more then 150 years ago and if it is not public already you can ask a curator to make it public (use https://www.geni.com/discussions/257429) .

  You could then create the linking profiles as duplicates. That should be enough to get those private duplicate profiles in your family group so you should be able to merge them.

  That will work if the profile is public or if you are in the family group of that profile already. If not you can try using what is in the post above.
