When I search for how my wife is related to someone, my family is mixed for some reason.

Job Waterreus Geni searches for the shortest path between profiles. Mostly there will be multiple paths between profiles and there can be multiple paths with the same length.
It will also depend on how fast Geni is able to update its indexes when information is changed. Tree conflicts can also change the path.
