I have been trying to copy my tree on Geni.com to another provider by first converting it into a gedcom file. But I have been finding that your procedure produces a compressed (zipped) file rather a .ged file. Am I doing something wrong?

Are you not able to unzip the file? that should give you a .ged file.
Also some providers will accept a compressed GEDCOM file (GEDCOM files can get big).
Hi Job
I have now solved my problem. I found that the Geni gedcom procedure downloaded a zipped file and an unzipped .ged file onto my laptop. However the latter was placed in such an inaccessible location in my laptop that the Browse function could not find It. Once I copied the unzipped file to a location alongside the zipped file, the Browse function found it easily. I hope that is clear. Thanks very much for your interest
Anne
I'm glad to hear you solved your problem.
Please think about the restrictions in the number of profiles for a GEDCOM (5.000 or 50.000 depending on your membership). It could be that due to that restriction some information is not in the GEDCOM.
You can do a GEDCOM export from any profile you added to Geni, so if you are missing some info you can try downloading one from a different person.
There are some programs that can combine multiple GEDCOM files (removing any duplicates), so that may also be an option if you have a very large tree.
