How is Geni different than all the other online Gedcom Family tree sites, i.e. Ancestry, MyHeritage, etc...

Geni.com mystifies me. I don't really understand how it works. I get how Ancestry.com, MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA.om work, but Geni.com eludes me.

First, why can't you just upload your entire Gedcom file to update it like you can on the other Family Tree sites. Geneanet.org  has this cool feature where when you upload your GedCom file it asks you if you want to REPLACE all current data or create a brand new Gedcom file. Updating Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA all offer uploading of your Gedcom file. Yet, Geni does not.

Furthermore, Is GENI like FamilySearch.org where other people can change your information? I still don't understand. Can someone explain to me how to best use GENI.com when you are using the other sites like Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilytreeDNA and Geneanet like I do?
