I find that when trying to use the search people function, it displays the names but does not take me to their profile.

  If you are a basic user you can only use it to go to profiles you manage or profiles that are managed by your collaborators. You can use Google or other external search engine to find other public profiles, but it would be easier to collaborate with users active in your part of the tree.
