Hello folks. I'm new to this website/service. Just looking for a little clarity.
I uploaded my autosomal dna from another site and got matched with some individuals here at about 23cms. So somewhere in the 2nd-4th cousin range.
The explanation Geni gives me is that "So-and-so is your first cousin thrice removed's wife's fifth cousin's wife's uncle's wife's great nephew's wife's half brother."
This doesn't make any sense since. Is the site giving false matches, or am I misunderstanding?
Hi Clinton, the relationship given with your DNA match is an estimate of how you may be related through your DNA results.
That in-law relationship you provided ("So-and-so is your first cousin thrice removed's wife's fifth cousin's wife's uncle's wife's great nephew's wife's half brother") is your connection to the person as it exists in the family tree on Geni. More research will need to be done so that you can find a blood relationship.
Hi, my question a similar to the one above. When I click on the relationship button on one of MY autosomal matches, I get this result:
... is your brother's ex-wife's first cousin's wife's great uncle's wife's second cousin thrice removed's husband's partner's ex-husband's daughter's husband's first cousin thrice removed.
If this is an autosomal match to me, how can we be related via my brother's ex-wife? I also couldn't find the name on my ex-SIL's tree.
Hi Hedvig, that relationship path is based on the connection as it exists in the tree. You will need to do more genealogy research to find the blood path between you and your autosomal DNA match.
