What are Discussions updates and who receives those?

Geni Discussions are a great way to communicate with other users, either publicly or with just your Family Group via private discussions.  Whenever you interact with a discussion or a profile you follow is tagged in a discussion, Geni will notify you (see below for how to turn this off).  Since there could be many such notifications, they are held for one day and then sent together as a "digest" email.  The types of interactions that will cause you to be notified of new messages in a discussion are:

  • You follow the discussion by clicking the Follow button at the top
  • You replied to the discussion
  • You or a profile you follow is tagged in the discussion (remember by default you follow the profiles you manage / added)

Once any of these interactions occurs, you will receive notification of new messages to that discussion thread for two days and 10 messages after the interaction.  After two days have passed and at least 10 new messages have been posted since your last interaction, the notifications will stop.

You can opt out of receiving discussion digests entirely by de-selecting "new messages to discussions I follow (once daily max)" on the Notifications Settings page or by clicking the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of any discussion digest email.

I don't like the new formatting for the Geni Discussion Notification.  I would like to let the "powers that be" know that I dislike the new "Discussion" notification process!!!  I like to follow several different ones, but have to save old Discussion notifications to see what is going on with them as the notification to my home email doesn't alway show them.  Also, I used to click on "view xxxx #" & it would take me to the last page of the discussion.  Now when I do that, It takes me to the 1st page & I have to click on the last page... Do we need all of the "messages" in the notification--makes that so long???  It would be nice to have maybe the first one or the last one, but don't need all of them!!!

I am the major contributor for the Genealogy Humor Discussion, and know that I have added to it, but don't always receive a notification that there is anything new there.  Quite a few people have said to cont. the Humor discussion, but rarely comment.  So if according to the above you stop sending messages after 10 new messages, these people will not be receiving a message that there are new ones.  How do I notify all in Geni about this discussion???

I like to follow the Curator help discussion as I frequently learn how to deal with a problem that I may have, now or in the future--the curators have some really good suggestions.  I don't alway have anything that I need help with, but it is an interesting site/discussion & liked to receive notification when others have problems!!!

I have check in my settings page to be notified of "new messages to discussions I follow", so am unsure why I am not receiving notifications for all of the discussions I follow.

Thank you for listening to me.

    Respectfully,

    Pat Scoggin

I was on vacation for 2 weeks, so now I don;t get any notifications at all, even those I have previously clicked to follow.  This needs further thought.

Perhaps it  would be helpful to add links (at the top and/or the bottom) of the email summary which provided a link to the person's "Discussions I Follow".  Something like:

"See all the Discussions you are following here: http://www.geni.com/discussions?discussion_type=followed"

"View all recent Public Discussions here: http://www.geni.com/discussions?discussion_type=general"

How can one delete "Recent Activity from my homepage?   I got caught up in viewing celebrities I may be related to, but ended up not being related to them by blood...so why say I am related to them via some ancestor's "husband"...Seriously?   I would like to delete that activity!
